Joe's Crappy Layout

Postby ronin1023 » Fri May 26, 2006 3:42 pm

Yes, I registered just to write this post. I do however feel that is justified as I just read every last Joe's movie strip without realizing each one had a review with it.

Now, I understand that having text below strips is standard. However, I made the blunder of assuming this was just the usuall 'sorry I never update: I'm lazy' and 'blah blah random inconsequential' news blog speak instead of an actuall honest to god review to go with the strip.

I don't really mean to give anyone too much guff but I would at least suggest that you make it a little more obvious to the digital pimp 'noob'.

Awesome strip btw.

While I'm in no way affiliated with the actual running and designing of this website, and it's not really my place to reply to your post, I feel a need to make a comment here.

If you're going to the title your post "Joe's Crappy Layout" and talk about what you didn't like about the layout, the least you could do is offer some suggestions as to what would be a better layout. Then you'd be in the land of constructive criticism, instead of just general bitching, and someone might be more inclined to listen to your complaint.

In this world, it's not enough to sceam and holler and point when you feel that something is wrong. You need to help solve it.

Screw that shit. I ain't the world's problem solver. Credit should be given to a person that does find a flaw. I design business models and web applications on a daily basis. If you think there's an issue wiht my project, let me know up front. I certainly don't expect middle management to come up with an alternative for me.

I think there're two options.

To me, the first one is this the better one. Straight to the point:

Image

Hehehe...
Alternatively, if you don't want to be so abrupt:

Discuss this week's Joe Loves Crappy Movies here!

See the Review for this film below.

**Comic Here**

Of course, this would involve anchoring the start of the review so that the person who clicks the button has their browser reposition the browser to the top of the review.

Ronin, thanks for joinging up to make the post. I'm always curiouse about what's working and not working with the set up, and if there are readers out there that don't know about the review then I'd love to find out a way to fix it.

On the main page it's less of a problem. All of the DP comics cycle through on the main page and when there is a JLCM comic up there there's a direct link that says "Read the review". However if you go right to the page it's not there.

I'm open to suggestions on how to solve it. I like the look of the site and don't want it to get to busy. Perhaps a reminder as part of the comic image to read the review? I'd want to keep it subtle though.

Still, it's an excellent point, thanks! :D

Subtle like I suggested?

*snicker*

Ok, over that now.

I think to have a little thingy in the corner of the last frame for every 2 or 3 comics (like, once a week or something) would be a good idea.

On a serious note, something like this would work, I'd think:

Again, only once or twice a week.

I don't think you'd need to put it on every comic.

Whatever you wanmt to do, though.

For anyone who didn't catch what I changed, here it is:

The quote comes to mind "It's impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious."

I think it'd be tough to design the site for every contingency. I think the text of the review is visible where it is and layout-wise there really isn't any other place for the text.

Placing a reminder in the image wouldn't work because the same image appears when the strip is on the front page. So if the strip were on the front page, it'd be pointing to a review that wasn't there.

Personally, I don't think reading the review is necessary to enjoying the strip. I don't read every review and I enjoy the strips just fine. The reviews are gravy.

I like to use this quote when I see products that are "Unbreakable" or "nonflammable"
It just goes to show, never stick your dick in a pudding. It might still be good pudding and you can spend all afternoon explaining that but no one’s going to eat it BECAUSE YOU STUCK YOUR DICK IN IT. ~ Yahtzee

Appropos of nothing...
"How did it catch on fire? I thought it was inflammable."
"Inflammable means flammable."
"Then why didn't they just say flammable?"

I'm still not sure how I want to handel it. I thnk i might do a comic actually telling people to look down and read the review. I have a joke that would work pretty well there. Plus it'll give me an opportunity to talk about alll the little associations that are less obviouse or rarely mentioned.

Stuff like Online comics, the vote sites, the blog sites, even the other strips at Digital Pimp. Hell even Coffee Achievers. It'll be a proper introduction to a year old comic, and i like that, but it's not a perminant soloution.

It'd be quite funny if you could have a contextually relevant comic about reviews and movies.

Sadly, there's no movies that I can see that'd fit the bill (The closest would be A Scanner Darkly or The Omen).

Or just something where you draw yourself and comment on the prospect of making fun of Mohammed, but don't.

Nah, that'd lower you to almost every webcomic there is in the level of "uncomedy".

Jumping back to The Omen, Liev Schreiber plays a government operative. Does anybody else see the opportunity to have a George Cameo here?

I know I do.
