Another Videogame Webcomic...

Postby chamber715 » Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:38 pm

Since Fish Tank Tango is on hiatus, Joe and I decided it'd be a good time to premiere a strip we've been talking about doing for a while... check it out!

So. What is the intention with regards to continuity and update schedule? Is the plan to put it on a regular update with an ongoing storyline or only when you have some sort of video game review/rant? Just curious what the plans are for this.

As to the comic, I have to say that the title has not really grabbed me. "Another Video Game Webcomic" sounds dangerously close to [Genre] Movie and is causing a somewhat negative reaction within me. I'm hoping that over time the content you post to override my feelings on the comic's title. I am intrigued by the idea of the everyday work experience being treated like a video game. I look forward to seeing more of what you guys have in mind for this.

Phil talks a little bit in that link about the review process and schedule we'll be testing out. Even a little bit about the origins of the name. I see the genre movie comparisons you're talking about but that was not our intention. it certainly won't be that kind of comic.

I liked the title for the very reasons Phil mentioned in his rant. Will this be getting its own button? Also the premise behind this (first) comic is just genius.

This is shaping up to be awesome. Looking forward to seeing it progress :D

I never meant to imply that the comic itself appeared to have some sort of link to the [genre] Movies. By all appearances, I don't expect this new comic to have anything in common with them. I'm just saying that, from a marketing or publicity stand point, that's my gut reaction to the title. Just something to think about as you try and build an audience for it.

It's true, the title invokes the same statement from me upon initial reading. That is to say, I read it and think "Oh, another video game comic..."

But I trust you guys to change it up a little bit. Although I can't help but think that Player Two looks an awful lot like Tom, but that's probably just me.

another video game web comic

They're kinda right about the title. It's a little blah. Puts me in the frame of mind of "Not Another Teen Movie" and the like, which, for me anyway, screams "RUN AWAY! RUN FAST! RUN LIKE THE VERY ARMIES OF HELL ITSELF ARE ON YOUR HEELS!"
Maybe that's an overreaction but you get the idea.

Love the comic so far. I have to say, it's interesting Joe, your artwork for Matriculated and this looks to be of one style, while Free Lunch and JLCM are of another style, as though Phil's writing of the strip alters the way you draw it.

I love both styles, so there's no foul, just an observation.

I think theres always room for more webcomics based around videogames, but I'm not sure theres much demand for reviews.

There just aren't good reviews for videogames, I dont think they lend themselves to reviewing.

That second panel in today's comic is confusing as hell. The balloons need to be moved or you get lost in the conversation. Otherwise it's fun.

This could be my fault. I really wanted this mirror image thing with P1 and P2. To just renforce that they look exactly the same but have differnt color hair. This lead me to stage it as it is and left little room for Middle Manager. He's a tiny little dude.

I could delete Middle Manager from that panel completely so that the first line comes form off screen.

That's one option.

Yeah, it probably would have been better to pull out further and put the manager on the far left so that P1 and P2 were on the right.

However, you could fix it like this.

It's still a kludge but it clears the conversation up a bit. You could probably move P2's likewise down to the lower right of his body and have pretty much the same effect.

Either way, the composition forces you to put the mangers balloon tail through P1 and P2's eye line. If possible you never want to have anything intersect the characters eye line.
