I'd thought about seeing My Name is Bruce but decided it wasn't a priority. I'd rather see Slumdog Millionaire or Repo if I'm headed to the indie theaters.

By the way - JCVD comic and review are now up!

What a great soliloquy! What a great scene. An actor in a movie staring as himself. The moment is like a musical break down!

He just rises above the scene and performs this solo of honesty, suffering, and self awareness. But then after making peace with the moment, after accepting the exposed flesh wound in his soul that he himself created he floats down ready to see this out. Ready to try something new.

Do any of you feel that this movie would have been better if it were... more American rather than European/film schoolish? The formula or format had its flaws. Also I think the story was flawed or at times poorly written. It's allegories were far too obvious. But that soliloquy helped to make up for it.

The fact that it was a little rough around the edges made it a slow burn, which ultimately made the climax, that much more brilliant. Only thing I would change at all would have been the ending/closing scene.

I liked the roughness too. Thought it had a great tone to it. I think too much polish would have taken away some of the authenticity form the scenes that really needed it.

Finally got around to seeing this. I liked it a lot. It's brilliance lies in the fact it is a suspense film, not an action film. Van Dam really does bare his soul in this. I liked how the beginning repeats itself to show us the whole story. I was afraid it would be self-serving, but Van Dam's character(I know it's supposed to be him, but he is an actor and this story was fiction) is as flawed as he is bold or noble. He makes a lot of mistakes and has his selfish moments. His hardcore fans might actually dislike the story, but I think it unfolded in a new interesting way.

I became one when he turned down a role in expendables because he didn't JUST want to take a pay check but also wanted a decent story.

He turned it down because he wanted a bigger role/ more money. Good script had nothing to do with it.

Read a few articles and vague turn of phrase caused me to look like an idiot. I had only seen the "Stalone couldn't describe the character" parts of things, not the rest.

I had actually read somewhere that on hearing that Stallone had a role in mind for him had him excited and interested, but on hearing that the character was basically two dimensional and was basically as expendable as the title suggests, he was reluctant to go in, and despite the possibility to resurrect his career, he didn't want to go in sharing the lead with other action heroes, he'd rather go back in as a star on his own terms and then do an ensemble flick like this. I remember reading him joke about doing a movie with Seagal and Norris... then thinking later "maybe he wasn't joking?"

From what I'm reading around it sounds like you're essentially right.

Watched the trailer and it was....unexpected. Looks like it could be surprisingly good.

I need to dig through some more 2 or 3 year old posts around here. ;-)
