Nintendo 3DS

Postby chamber715 » Mon Apr 18, 2011 9:52 am

Anyone actually pick one of these up? I was initially excited about the handheld, but between the time it was announced and the time it shipped, my interest waned. They've had demo units in Best Buy and Target but they've been underwhelming. I don't know if it's the tech isn't that good or the game they demo doesn't really show off the 3D or if I don't want to hunch over the demo unit to find the 3D sweet spot, but I'm not too impressed.

Seems to me that 3D on a hand held unit would be to small and jumbled to fully utilize that media. Also I'm not that big a fan of the hand held units. I played GTA on a friends PSP and it really just anoyed me more than I enjoyed playing it. My sons Nintendo DS is ok but again I cannot get over the smallness of everything. Just makes me want to play the regular Wii or Xbox 360.

I thought the 3D Dead or Alive comic about this was hilarious, by the way.

I think introducing glassless 3D technology in a handheld is a pretty good idea. Since we're probably at least a few years off from that technology being economically feasible in larger electronics. My problem is really with the execution, since the 3D wasn't so spectacular in the first place.

Handhelds are good if you're on the go a lot. When I had a 30 minute commute on a train, I'd play games on my PSP and DS. Some games are suited for handheld play, but what I find to be the biggest mistake for the PSP is trying to replicate a console experience on the handheld. It's a nice idea in theory, but it dilutes the whole idea of a handheld.

Thanks.

Yea to be fair the only game I have played in PSP was GTA so you are prolly right about that. I have not played any games made just for it.

Yeah, part of the problem is that there aren't a whole lot of games that are made with the PSP in mind. Mostly just games that would have been on the PS2 but smaller.

PS2? Half the games I own for my PSP are Playstation ports. (Hate my PSP by the way, but it's spews forth so many JRPGS). Apparently the 3D technology it uses would only work with a handheld, because its all about the positioning of your eyes and the screen. Looks cool, but I'm waiting on games. I'd buy 2 or 3 in order to play Megaman Legends 3 if I needed to. (Though I'm not optimistic about its chances of ever coming out).

I think 3D technology will advance to the point where they'd be able to upscale it to larger viewing areas. All it really needs to do is to deliver two slightly different images to each of your eyes. If you had a tv that had a camera attached that could distinguish where your eyes were at any given moment and be able to deliver those two sets of images, you'd get the 3D effect. Oddly enough, I think that the Thor slurpee cups use a lower tech but same technique as the 3DS to get an illusion of depth.

After the announcement of the cancellation of Megaman Legends 3 (despite the fact they had a 'dev room' set up where they were, and had, incorporated fans ideas into the game, with the last addition only a few weeks ago, I believe) I officially no longer give a shit about the 3DS. (They also 'scrapped' the downloadable prologue that was supposed to be released in June). It's actually ruined my day. And I'm not sure how to feel about Capcom generally after this, I hope at least they expand on their reasons for cancelling it.
