New Review Features

Postby Willeth » Mon Dec 04, 2006 6:23 am

I just checked out the Turistas review and I'm really enjoying the movie poster/quick-glance scorecard. I think it'll really help bring JLCM out as a serious review source as well as a comic (as it should be, of course).

Yeah, I just noticed it too. Nice and clear yet undistracting.

Plus, it means that those who complain about the length of your reviews can recognise that you're not only reviewing the film, but also are commenting on other things as well (Case in point is the audio commentary that those 2 guys had about it on the podcast... did anybody else find it a little hypocritical how they put down the review based on its length and they ranted about it for how long?)

Anyway, my question is, will the back catalogue be updated with the new graphics and inclusion of the poster and basic tech details too, or is this a "from here on out" kind of thing?

Wait, people complained about the length of the reviews? If it's any shorter than that I don't think it counts as a review - just a synopsis.

Didn't you listen to that audio review that we were talking about a little while back? Like a month or two back.

Anyway, I may have embellished a little; they said that "the only criticism is the length of the review".

Otherwise they were happy.

But yeah, I agree. Then again, you and I would both agree since we both prettle on.

No, I didn't, I must have missed that one.

For some reason I only just now noticed the headers and DVD worthy meter. Yay, and so forth.

I'm going to refrain from posting any more until we get a third person in this thread just to prevent it becoming a giant circle-jerk.

Yeah. All we're doing right now is jumping between this and the Joe and Monkey threads.

Nice new features. I especially like the way he uses the new font to separate the different sections. Makes it a lot easier to navigate.

Also mad props on the quick-glance review score card. That's really nice and makes things a whole lot easier.

It's funny, when I first saw the poster for Turistas (Not the one pictured on the site, a different one) I thought it was a comedy. Oh what could have been...

Yes, I also like the way the site is maturing and shaping up. Very well done!

thanks guys, It's somethign I wanted to add for a while and I'm happy with the way it breaks things up. It makes the main review look less menacing in length. I still need to tinker with it though. I'm noticing a color problem I didn't see last night, and the pxelation is a little high so I may need to reupload slightly better versions. it'll shape up over time.

But I'm glad everyone likes it so far.

Joe - use GIF's ... there will be no pixelation. Your images don't have gradients or other "gif killers" so it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, i think it looks REALLY sharp. Well done!

Thanks Dan.

I was using gifs during my first pass but was having anit-alias problems. I've since squared things out, but I'd be worried about the gradieant in the lettering. It's subtle nough where it might not make a difference. I'll play around with it though

Joe, I think this is a BRILLIANT idea for your blogs - especially since it highlights your reviews. I agree that those are a major draw to the site and I think it's going to really highlight them for you.

I wish I could write reviews like you do. Y'know... more professionally. But I just don't want to put the effort into it. I applaud you for keeping them going strong!

This "sectioning" idea of yours is a really good one. I could use something similar to this for my blogs so I can talk about movie stuff and site stuff while not making things look like a mile long piece of copy.

Do you mind if I steal this concept for my redesign? :D

By the way - thanks for the plug on tonight's talkcast. Do you think you'll be able to make it?

Cool, I'm glad you like it. If you used the idea it wouldn't really be stealing since I'm not the first to do it. Besides, about 4 strips in I realized JLCM was a poor man's theater hopper, so I owe you one. Just don't make your blog breaks look too much better than mine. :D

The podcast situation has been the source for much argument in the DunnJun home this past weekend. The Os on both of my coputers aren't new enough to get Talkshoe or Skype working. It's not like the things are even that old.

I'm going to try but chances are I'll just be listening to this first pod cast. I'm looking forward to it thought.

Cool. Thanks for the all-clear.

Even if you can't call in tonight, it would be cool if you can listen. It'll help while I'm collecting feedback!
