10 on the 10th - 1/07 - Top 10 Spy Movies

Postby joerules » Tue Dec 12, 2006 3:12 am

Well... here we are.

Long overdue, but here is the next installment of the 10 on the 10th. Spy movies, inspired by Casino Royale. Those of you anxiously awaiting a comic for Casino Royale, don’t worry – it’s coming. It’s a monster, but it’s coming. Don’t feel pressure to vote for it. If it wins there will just be two Casino Royale comics.

For an explination on where the 10 on the 10th has been for the last couple months, come back tomorrow for a second Ghostbusters comic.

In the meanwhile, cast your vote for next month and let me know what movies you would put on the list.

Instead of including 2 Austin Powers movies, I deifnately would have included I Spy with Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy. Owen Wilson always does great in buddy comedies and nobody knows why. And honestly? It's hard to beat Eddie Murphy in anything. Despite my love of Austin Powers, my vote goes to Spies Like Us. Maybe it's the leftover Ghostbusters/Dan Akroyd love.

Yeah I went back and forth over wheter I should double up on franchises like 2 Austin movies and 2 MI movies, but I wanted the list to be accurate and those four movies are all really great movies. Better than the stuff at the bottom of the list and even other spy movies I like like XXX and Spy Kids.

I felt like I didn't want to punish these movies just because they were in the same franchise.

Spies like us is a great choice though. "Doctor. Doctor."

xXx was also a good one, mostly just because Vin Deisel is more awesome than awesome sauce. That's one of the last movies where he was truly beyond badass.

Yeah he needs to return to that level of cool. I have high hopes for Hitman. I really love XXX too, but the more I looked into it the more great spy movies I kept finding.

I agree about the inclusion of I Spy in the list. It may not be pure comedy brilliance, but Owen's awareness of the genre conventions and clichés had me laughing througout the whole thing. The "she's a spy / she's a double spy / she is a double-double spy" bit was great.

My vote goes to MI, anyway. Great movie, kept me guessing... and the hacking scene is classic (as is the sleigth of hand with the hacked diskette)

Gotta go with Confessions. Just well acted and well scripted work. A truly great spy movie couched in game show programming.

I may end up seeing Casino more, but Confessions is very highly respected in my house.

I would've added Top Secret.

I'd have had Get Smart.

But other than tha, it's a really, really tough call. They're all such great movies, and each diverse and different in its own right.

I think I'm going to have to give it to Enemy Of The State. The Cast. The shoots. The story. All of it was completely new, fresh, and somehow defined a high level of raw and grungey while still being juxtaposed with Sleek and refined.

I think I have to send my vote that way.

They haven't made a Get Smart movie yet.

There were two Get Smart movies with Don Adams.

And they're making the spoof re-make with Steve Carrell sometime, but they certainly have, but they were made for TV.

I didn't think made for TV would matter if it was a good film and was a spy film.

I don't know if you can spoof a spoof...

I'm aware of the made for TV movies, but they don't count in my mind because they were made for TV.

Much as I enjoyed Spies Like Us I had to go with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I think the fact that Chuck Barris had the guts to say that it all actually happened puts it ahead.
I also like it because I think it's a really great adaptation. Kaufman really worked wonders with it. Definitely one of his most underrated works.

Another reason that the Get Smart TV movies don't get my nod is because they were inferior to the television show. I just can't put my support behind them when I'd much rather be voting for the show.

Other Spy Movies that I really think could be on this list but aren't because Joe probably hasn't seen them...

Three Days of the Condor - another spy flick with Robert Redford. Good pacing and, watching it about a year ago, it still works today.

The Marathon Man - I don't know if this is truly a 'Spy' movie, but it deals with some intrigue and espionage I suppose. And it's intense. A good flick. Dustin Hoffman is his geeky best.
