I didn't automatically assume anything. I looked at where the text was leading us, and thought what expectations one could draw from that. Then I thought what could come from that one might not expect. And then I thought which one of those options would be bad for Dan, but ultimately humorous for the readers. The angle I proposed seemed to fit the bill, though I doubt that's actually where Phil is taking us.

My actual guess is that New Girl is going to come back and let Dan know that Sally is totally into him. Dan will respond that such a thing could not possibly be for they are nemeses.

This will be quite the quandary for our loveable loser. From zero potential romantic interests to two. The nemesis or the new girl. If my understanding of such things is clear, he'll initially choose new girl, but realize he'd rather be with Sally. Of course, things don't always have to go that way.
