Geez, my ideal jump caused a whole page of debate. That's a win in my book.

I didn't think of force as moving like a vector, which makes a bit more sense. But wouldn't that mean that he would have to find the exact opposite side of the planet?

So wait opie, you mean that in the book all this is simply explained like "a wizard did it"?
It just goes to show, never stick your dick in a pudding. It might still be good pudding and you can spend all afternoon explaining that but no one’s going to eat it BECAUSE YOU STUCK YOUR DICK IN IT. ~ Yahtzee

Well, it's not Mephisto made a deal with him and the past ten years of his life were rearranged to match Editor fiat, no.

But Gould does try to address some of the physics associated with instantaneous travel between two geographical points. Angular momentum and relative orientation are two such issues. So, yes, Gould does point these things out, and then make a hand-waving motion to suggest that the process of teleportation, in addition to allowing a jumper to travel instantaneously between any two points, also compensates for a variety of factors. Just like a bird doesn't consider the physics of flight when it takes to wing, a jumper can teleport to China without worrying about landing on his or her head.

And of course, he doesn't really take a stab at explaining how a human being can teleport either. So if his explanation of how momentum is removed is "A Wizard Did It", then so is his explanation of Teleportation in general.

I agree. And...I can visualize a fairly funny comic to it...

Frame one...

Joe and a couple guys are standing around after the movie in the theater lobby talking about the film. Joe says something like "So...if you could jump anywhere...where would you guys jump to?"

Frame two...

A narly-extreme-sports type guy standing nearby jumps into the conversation with "Oh man! If I could jump anywhere I would just keep jumping up to 2000 feet and be in a total freefall all day! Like...whoa dude!"

Frame three...

Shows guy falling with a euphoric look on his face yelling "Sweet!"

Frame four...

Shows guy jump back to the top yelling something like "Far out!"

Frame five...

Shows guy falling and saying "I'm getting hungry...I think I'll jump over to the Circle K for a slurpee!"

Frame six...

Shows the inside of a Circle K. There is a pile of the lads clothes and an explosion with the word "Splat!"

Frame seven...

Snap back to Joe and his friends standing around looking at each other with one of them saying somethig like "Alas...we hardly knew ye..."

I see a funnier comic, where Joe is all snug and tucked into bed while off to the side we see Morgan Freeman reading "Call me Ishmael."

Or better yet he takes the role of the grandpa in Princess Bride.

But that comic doesn't take the Jump with Joe contest theme into account. Besides, if Morgan Freeman is going to be in the comic at all, then he has to play all of the parts.

About a year and a half actually. Surprised to see that anyone remembers me. When I was posting regularly before, it was when I was working at dull law firm and had all day to peruse the forums. When my son was born and I started being the housedude, my time became much less available. But now that he's 14 months old, he's a little more independent so my time isn't totally manipulated.

Hey, congratulations, man! My daughter's four months old now. I look forward to her not needing someone keeping close tabs on her absolutely every second.

I just got to the section of tghe book where he tests out the effects of gravity and inertia on the jumps. It's nice that Gould took the time to at least acknowledge it where as the movie seemed to use it and loose it when it suited them. That mega punch that Jamie Bell delivers is pretty bad ass though. :D
